What's On My Wall?

by Samir

There's a certain school of thought that says "You are what you eat." Well, I checked in the mirror and I certainly don't look like ground beef, so I have no idea what that's all about. There is more to be revealed about a person in his wall decor than anywhere else, except maybe in his very heart.

Being that Iknow you're at my official site for one reason and one reason only, and that's to read about me or read stuff I've written. Either that or you're actually looking for skunks on the Internet, but if you are, aren't you happy you found this instead? Oh hell yeah, I know I would be.

So without further ado, let me show you what is on one of the walls in my room:

This is the North Wall of my room. Let us take a look at what these items are, in detail.

1. Back in 1992, at the tender age of 12, I went to this summer camp called Explorations, that was run by McGill University and operated at Dawson College. It was a camp for kids that featured all sorts of cool, intellectual classes, and one of them was called "Math in Arts." One of our topics was the work of an artist called MC Escher. Escher was famous for creating patterns and optical illusions (sometimes both in the same oeuvre). Using some basic trigonometry, we all were able to make our own Escher sketches, and that one is mine. It's not very good, but it's certainly unique. I wish I could remember the steps to do the Escher sketches today, they certainly are fascinating.

2. In Grade 8 (1994-95), I had an art class with a teacher called Ms. Ksiondz (prounced "Shundz"). She was the first open lesbian I ever new. She also was probably the least artistic lesbian I've ever come across, but anyway! We went outside one fall day and got an assload of leaves. Then, we traced them on a see-through paper. Then, we used that paper to make dot drawings of leaves. This is probably the only drawing I've ever done where the subject and the work resemble themselves to a recognizable degree. Therefore, it is framed and on my wall.

3. This is a self-portrait of me from 1992. Perhaps I was inspired by the Escher thing, or perhaps it was just some sort of clandestine mechanism deep within my psyche, but after Explorations ended, I bought a bunch of paints and a bristol board, and then, using a picture of myself, I painted myself. No one actually can tell it's me, even the people who knew what I looked like at 12. I'm not sure why I made it so dark, with the dominant color as purple, but if anyone asks, I just say it's because of my inner artist as if that explains it all. Hey, artists ARE weirdos if you know what I mean.

4. This is a small poster that came with the game Star Trek TNG on Gameboy. Not Gameboy Color or Advance, just regular fricking green and grey screen Gameboy. The game kind of sucked, to be honest, but I have not found a better picture of the crew since. Best part? No Tasha Yar. Ohmigod, Becky, can this guy ever shut up about Star Trek? Hell no! TNG 4 Life.

5. This is a piece of art that contains Koranic verses. Last year I sort of cast off religion altogether. I was going to throw this thing out, but then it struck me how beautiful this thing was, just as a piece of art. So I kept it. It's an interesting reminder of where I've "been", so to speak. Remember, those without a past are robbed of a future! Now, before I say two deep things in a row, I better move on.

6. As the French say, La Pièce de Resistance. It's a well-known fact that the rockest rock band of all time is AC/DC. And it's a well-known fact that their opus is undoubtedly Back In Black, to take nothing away from their original lead singer Bon. The lightning bolt between the first C and the D has come to symbolize all of what was so awesome about Rock when it was still Rock, none of this radio shit you hear today without 20:00 guitar solos and high-pitched screaming, big hair, songs about things other than just love and war. This simple banner is my reminder of Rock, it is what keeps me sane when stuff like Creed and Limp Bizkit are on the radio. Hell yeah, and Angus, rock on forever.

I need a little something to fill the space above #1 and to the left of #4. I know, and I'm workin' on it. But for now, there you have it. My name is Samir, and this is my Wall.
